SPEECH LENGTH GUIDE · 30 MIN

How many words is a 30-minute speech?

A 30-minute speech is about 3,900–4,500 words at a typical speaking pace of 130–150 words per minute.

Treat thirty minutes as a session rather than a speech. Plan it in chapters, each with its own point and ending, and leave time for questions.

Tip for this length

End each chapter with a one-line takeaway, as if the talk could stop there. If you run short of time, it can.

When you rehearse with a timer, check yourself at the 15-minute mark. At 140 words a minute you should be around word 2,100.

QUESTIONS

How much of a 30-minute slot should be questions?

If questions are expected, plan 20 to 25 minutes of talk. Keep one extra example ready in case nobody asks anything.
